Yitzhak Edward Asner [1]  was born November 15, 1929, in Kansas City, MO. He was raised in an Orthodox
Jewish household with his mother Lizzie and his father David. Asner attended the University of Chicago
afterwards worked on the assembly line at General Motors. He served with the U.S. Army Signal Corp,
which is where he first got a taste of acting. Ed then went on to become an American actor, voice actor
and a former president of the Screen Actors Guild. He is primarily known for his role as Lou Grant during
the 1970s and early 1980s, on both The Mary Tyler Moore Show and its spin-off series Lou Grant, making
him one of the few television actors to portray the same leading character in both a comedy and a drama.
He is also known for portraying Santa Claus in the comedy film Elf (2003) and its animated remake Elf:
Buddy's Musical Christmas (2014). He is the most honored male performer in the history of the Primetime Emmy Awards, having won seven. [3]
Along with being a great contributor to the acting world,  Ed is also an activist who support numerous
causes include Holocaust survivors, free speech, children of political activists, wildlife conservation, and
education for those who learn differently. It is Ed’s family experiences with autism that led him to open
the Ed Asner Family Center in July 2018 with his son and daughter-in-law with a mission to promote self-
confidence in differently abled individuals and bring balance and wellness to those individuals and their families.
